Perched on the rugged granite cliffs of Newport, Rhode Island, the Castle Hill Lighthouse has stood as a beacon of maritime history since its first illumination in 1890. This iconic structure, designed in the Romanesque style and attributed to renowned architect Henry Hobson Richardson, was constructed to guide vessels through the East Passage of Narragansett Bay into Newport Harbor .​

The lighthouse's establishment was made possible by Alexander Agassiz, a Harvard zoologist and oceanographer, who sold the land to the U.S. government for $1 in 1887 . Built from rusticated granite blocks, the 34-foot-tall conical tower features a black lantern room and was originally equipped with a fifth-order Fresnel lens . Automated in 1957, the lighthouse continues to serve as an active aid to navigation.​
