She’s haunted more than just the battlements. She’s haunted New England folklore for generations. The Lady In Black Tee pays tribute to one of Boston Harbor’s most chilling and enduring legends—an eerie tale rooted in real 19th-century events at Fort Warren.

According to verified historical accounts, Fort Warren was used as a prison during the Civil War, holding Confederate soldiers captured by Union forces. One prisoner, Confederate officer Lieutenant Andrew Lanier, was said to have received an audacious rescue attempt by his wife, Melanie Lanier. Disguised as a man and smuggling a pistol and pickaxe, she snuck onto Georges Island and tried to break him out of the granite fortress. The plan failed. In a tragic accident during the botched escape, Melanie’s weapon misfired, killing her husband.

She was captured and sentenced to death by hanging. Before her execution, she requested a woman’s dress but had none. The Union soldiers reportedly fashioned a crude black robe for her out of available materials. Since her death in 1862, visitors and staff have reported ghostly sightings of a veiled woman in black—forever mourning among the ramparts.

The Lady in Black has become one of Massachusetts' most famous ghost stories—echoed in official park ranger tours and historical archives. Now, you can wear a piece of that coastal mystery in style. Soft, breathable, and made to move with you, this tee is perfect for haunted history buffs, lighthouse lovers, and maritime explorers alike.
