On August 4, 1892, the industrial town of Fall River, Massachusetts was rocked by the brutal axe murders of Andrew and Abby Borden, found slain in their home on Second Street. Their daughter, Lizzie Borden, was arrested for the crime and stood trial in 1893. The case quickly gripped the nation—an upper-class woman, accused of such grisly acts, was unheard of. Despite public suspicion and dramatic courtroom testimony, Lizzie was acquitted… but the shadow of doubt has never faded.

Bridget Sullivan: The Maid with the Alibi

At the heart of the courtroom drama was Bridget Sullivan, the Borden family maid. An Irish immigrant working under difficult conditions, Bridget’s testimony became a key piece of the puzzle. When asked what she was doing during the time of the murders, her answer became legend:

"I was washing the windows."

We wanted to mix the design up a little bit and instead wrote "I was cleaning the windows" This was done intentionally to reflect the testimony of others from that time who claimed she said "I was cleaning the windows". What to believe will forever be a mystery in regard to this famous case!

Was she an innocent bystander, or did she hear or see more than she let on? We may never know. But her story lives on, etched into the bizarre, bloody history of Fall River.
