In the mid-1600s, a pirate named Thomas Veal is said to have fled the British navy and taken refuge in a secret cave near what’s now known as Dungeon Rock. According to local legend, Veal brought with him a stash of stolen treasure and hid it underground. When an earthquake struck in 1658, the cave reportedly collapsed—trapping him (and his loot) forever beneath the stone.

Fast forward to the 1850s, when a spiritualist named Hiram Marble and his son, Daniel, claimed they received messages from the spirit world guiding them to Veal’s buried treasure. They spent decades digging deep into the granite by hand, building tunnels still accessible today. Though no gold was ever found, the legend lives on in echoing chambers and shadowed paths.
